Saturday Again!

I keep hoping to be able to describe the day as “Shitstorm Saturday” but it hasn’t quite happened yet.

Which saves me from the dilemma of trying to decide whether I should call it a “fecal tornado” to be more polite.

Edit to add: Colorado Statehood Day

Just realized today is Colorado’s Statehood Day. August first 1876, we became the 38th state. And Old Glory had 38 stars on it for the next thirteen years (nearly a record at the time, though the interval between Missouri and Arkansas being admitted with 16 years, and we stuck with the 15 star flag for a lot longer than we should have–long enough for it to be “the flag [that] was still there”). And we picked up one of our nicknames, “Centennial State.”

So we’ve now been giving 144 years of service to Californians and Texans as a place to go to when they realize their mistake. Though at least Texans usually go home after tourist season ends. Californians inflict their bad political choices on us.

A Reminder Of Today’s Issues.

Our movement is about replacing a failed and corrupt political establishment with a new government controlled by you, the American People...Our campaign represents a true existential threat, like they’ve never seen before.

Then-Candidate Donald J. Trump

Needs to happen, soon.

This is the WQTH Daily Thread. You know the drill. There’s no Political correctness, but civility is a requirement. There are Important Guidelines,  here, with an addendum on 20191110.

We have a new board – called The U Tree – where people can take each other to the woodshed without fear of censorship or moderation.

And remember Wheatie’s Rules:

1. No food fights
2. No running with scissors.
3. If you bring snacks, bring enough for everyone.
4. The gun is always loaded.
4a. If you actually want the gun to be loaded, like because you’re checking out a bump in the night, then it’s empty.
5. Never point the gun at anything you’re not willing to destroy.
6. Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire.
7. Be sure of your target and what is behind it.
8. Social Justice Warriors, ANTIFA pukes, BLM hypocrites, and other assorted varieties of Marxists can go copulate with themselves, or if insufficiently limber, may substitute a rusty wire brush suitable for cleaning the bore of a twelve or ten gauge.

(Hmm a few extras seem to have crept in.)

Coin of The Day

I realized today that the dollar is five hundred years old this year.

We didn’t invent dollars, the Bohemians did. There was a major silver strike in the town of Joachimsthal in the early 1500s, and the only way, politically, to export that silver was to make it into big coins–about the size and weight of the silver dollar, and this became a joachimsthaler. This got shortened to thaler in due course, or even taler. (Pronounced like “taller” not “tailor” or “tailer,” that last being Slick Willie’s only possible interest in it.) The Dutch, who traded with the 13 colonies, especially during the French and Indian War (a/k/a the Seven Years War, which really was the first true world war with fighting on at least three continents), called coins this size daalers, and they had a lot of them, from trading with Spain. There the denomination was the eight reales, hence the piece of eight, and a reale we called a “bit” (so now the origin of the slang “two bits” for a quarter is clear).

Trying to find a good image of one of these coins is a bit of a challenge, and the best one I could find was tiny, so here goes:

1525 Joachimsthaler

Russia didn’t have large silver coins at the time. The ruble was a bookkeeping unit only, consisting of two hundred dengas, but there was an attempt in the 1650s to introduce a ruble coin. It was seriously underweight (weighed less than 200 dengas), so it didn’t go over too well, and the Russians were in any case trying to use an outdated (even then) technology to strike them.

1654 ruble, known as a yefimok

I bring this up because those coins were known as yefimoks…because instead of dropping the first part of the word joachimsthaler, they dropped the last part, and Yefim is the Russian equivalent of Joachim (Jonathan). Russia went through many rounds of inflation in the 1700s, to the point where the proper weight of a ruble was now less than a thaler, not more, and they tried to introduce a “heavy ruble” to combat inflation, and also issued 1.4 and 1.5 ruble coins periodically, about the right weight to match a thaler.

The English “Crown” of five shillings was also considered roughly the same, in fact large silver coins about the weight of a dollar are often called crowns as a generic class by people who collect foreign coins–some even specialize in the size, collecting coins of that size (but very different denominations) from countries all over the world. (Pesos, rubles, crowns, thalers, dollars, yen, guilders, florins, five mark pieces…those large silver coins turned out to be pretty popular.) The man most famous for popularizing that line of collecting was named John S. Davenport.

Of course NONE of these units of money are worth what they used to be; the US Dollar has probably eroded less than the others, certainly less than the yen, ruble, and peso, but it has still eroded quite a bit.

But returning to Joachmisthal.

When the Curies were doing their investigations of the radioactivity present in uranium ore even after the uranium had been removed, they got their ore from a place called Jachymov, in Bohemia. Ultimately that line of research led to people discovering atomic fission, and thence to the Bomb. And when the Nazis tried to pursue their own version of the Manhattan Project, their source of uranium was Jachymov, which after all was in the Sudentenland, which they had seized in 1938.

What does that have to do with Joachimsthal? Jachymov is merely the Czech name (and thus the current best name) for the town once known as Joachimsthal.

So it turns out the Dollar and the Bomb both came from the same place.

Standard disclaimer: Neither these, nor any other coins I show here, are ones I own. In some cases I own a similar coin or coins, but by no means all or even most of them. [At least one place didn’t appreciate me linking to their images a couple of weeks ago. We’ll see how this one goes.]

Just one more thing, my standard Public Service Announcement. We don’t want to forget this!!!

40 million Americans filed for unemployment during the pandemic, but billionaires saw their net worth increase by half a trillion dollars. This isn’t the first time billionaires have seen gains while others dealt with loss, and it tends to tie back to two things.

First, the government disproportionately gives more aid to banks and corporations.

Then, when the stock market bounces back, the unequal bailouts mean that the wealthy still have money on hand to invest and thus profit, while the middle and lower classes do not. Wealth-friendly tax laws and loopholes then keep those billionaires at the top. Knowing all of this, some are advocating for policies to help level the playing field and create change.

Interesting what he says about the studies being set up to fail … reminds me of adding HCQ to a patient’s care without adding the zinc or evaluating HCQ’s effectiveness when given to those already in ICU and on breathing machines – missing the point of how it works and being set up to fail.

Will be interested if follow up studies have been done or if the data/results have been replicated given proper parameters.

      2. “Interesting what he says about the studies being set up to fail …”

Yes, I addressed that earlier today.

I finally remembered the correct term for what was done in the HCQ studies. It is called Omitted variable fraud

They used it to ‘prove’ CO2 controls the climate instead of the SUN!

….The IPCC also made a further request, which reviewers were not required to agree to, that we “not discuss the contents of the FOD in public fora such as blogs.”

Given what I found—systematic fraud—it would not be moral to honor this un-agreed to request, and because my comments are about what is omitted, the fraud is easy enough to expose without quoting the draft. My entire review (4700 words) only contains a half dozen quotes, which can easily be replaced here with descriptions of the quoted material. Cited section numbers are also easy to replace with descriptions of the subjects addressed. And so with Anthony’s permission, here is the rest of my minimally altered review:

Introduction to the “omitted variable fraud” critique, continued…

He had previously been Paul, the son of Leto Atreides, who was a prominent duke in that empire, but their feudal rivals, the Harkonnens, managed to wipe out almost all of that family. The thing is, Paul’s family’s world was Arakkis, which controlled the spice, which in turn made interstellar travel possible. There were people living out in the desert (the whole world was desert), Paul made them into a formidable army and seized control of Arakkis–and battled the emperor’s forces and defeated THEM. So a quick marriage to the emperor’s daughter was arranged and Paul became emperor.

        1. I am sure you were right. I didn’t follow all husband was saying and husband was too busy to tell me all … and I really wasn’t listening to that side track as I was more interested in getting the research info out of him while I had his attention for a few minutes.

He started talking about some book and I tuned out … he and I don’t share the same taste in entertainment – movies, music or books. I am a nerd who enjoys detailed history, biography, public policy, etc. … dry, boring humanities and he is either science, IT or complete “fun”/fiction including sci fi and “guy” movies (I surprise him every now and then by watching a “guy movie” … only when history based/semi-based overlap into “guy movies”, such as WWII). I am country music, classical, jazz, retro (Bing, Frank, Perry Como) while he is techno, heavy rock and I don’t know what. I have literally heard his music from another room and thought he was using some kind of electrical tools and they broke! ha We do overlap in easy listening and our high school year’s pop rock. So different … and yet it works for us! 🙂

Anyway, what I posted is what I took away from what he said and I really didn’t find that interesting or listen that closely to be honest … just interesting that the author chose it specifically as he is playing a role in this “awakening”. Never heard of the book or the movie.

Didn’t mean to give false info ….

I have been reading through (not a biology nor chem much less medical research background as husband) but this author seems to be basing his info on quality studies and research.

            1. I might … husband and son could not figure out why I actually really like the White House has fallen/London has fallen series (I forget the real names of the movies) and then we finally figured out it was because they are current events/politics based so it made actual logical sense to me and kept my interest as it could almost be real.

….just asked husband and he said, No! without hestiation as I would not “get” Dune as not reality based/too much fantasy for me and I would get frustrated and irritable. Alrighty then! Guess he isn’t holding back his opinions tonight! ha Guess that is what I get for interrupting him when he is pulling late, long hours for work. He said he has seen it a number of times … and I really don’t remember him ever mentioning it before but we really don’t talk movies as we are so different. He said same about the Matrix for me.

Bless his heart. 2 late nights, in the garden today, run to town and now back to work for a few hours with a full day of work staring him in the face for tomorrow to hit the Monday deadline. Late nights are much harder these days than back in our 20s!

              1. He knows you far better than I ever will, and he knows the book too, so I’d go with his judgment. By the way there were two different movies, one from the late 70s/early 80s which I hated, and one done much later by the SyFy network, which I liked a lot better. NEITHER of them really captured the intrigue, though, which is what I was thinking you’d like the best.

Reading Dune does take work; it’s a very detailed future world (about 25K years in the future).

    4. Side note … web site set up in a time zone 4 hrs ahead of Eastern Standard Time … but where is that? Not much located in that time zone! At first I converted it to London … but no, 1 hr behind London. IDK

    1. IMO Concerning the darker colored map, but is applicable to a lesser extent with the Covid Map which seems a bit tighter, I’d say you have something akin to a map of commonly made loose associations, based in theory and conspiracy mixed with fact while omitting other theories, conspiracies and facts. Upon close examination many of these titles and their groupings quickly loose their implied associations but in the larger scheme which blurs out what you should know about importance and juxtaposition in time and place before making proper assumptions, it seems to provide what one might assume is a universal theme in understanding world events, but in reality is just a semi good memory jogger, and one that should be used with caution even if your only writing a book of fiction.

        1. Provides one example. Lower right hand corner Inanna / Ishtar/ Isis / Aphrodite / Venus are given together.
If instead of Isis who has no relevant connection with the other names, Astarte would of made much more sense as she was the Canaanite watered down version of Inanna/Ishtar, a process that began in Babylon and took over a thousand years to accomplish, (and only after the Assyrians lost power), by de-emphasizing Ishtar’s powers. Since the poster likes to emphasis Caanan, I don’t see why they’d put Isis there when Astarte is the logical connection.

      1. LOL The only “universal” theories would be sourced in the Lord…Like “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, soul, mind, & strength…& love your neighbor as yourself. On these hang ALL the law & the prophets!” (forgive my loose quoting here & jumping versions).

It’s almost impossible to get a thorough map of explanation of worldwide events & meanings without a God’s-eye view…& since He looks on the heart we are never even capable of such a perspective as long as we still live on the planet, at least imho 😉

Time to stop hoping the Demoncrats will be civil, debate facts and policy and respect election rules! It’s time to beat them at their own game, punch them in the mouth figuratively, we win, they lose! They don’t like us playing by their rules, then they can go back to pre 1990s and we will gladly go there when they show they have! Until then, we win, they lose is the new rule

      1. I know – it is sad – some employees have no choice – if they refuse – they lose their jobs – if you want to shop in certain stores – you must wear a mask – some are fighting against it – not enough, tho’, Kal.

        1. The other day there was a post about a young woman (22, I think) who had just hired on as a cashier in a store, forced to wear a mask 7-8 hours, continuously. She contracted pleurisy (at first they thought it was COVID-19, which would have been both ironic and fatal, if treated the way they normally do), and has been in intensive care for some time now… Hope and pray she’s doing OK.

Why is the media silencing information they don’t like?

Why is @Twitter censoring the facts that don’t fit their narrative?

    1. The “Sound of Freedom” starring Jim Caviezel and Mira Sorvino. The Sound of Freedom is a full-length feature film based on the true story of Tim Ballard and Operation Underground Railroad. The film opens with Tim as a government Special Agent whose investigation leads him to the darkest places of Colombia and forces him to choose between keeping his job and family safe, or risking it all to rescue children he has never met. Watch as Tim and the beginnings of his new team, who will one day call themselves Operation Underground Railroad, infiltrate the most dangerous child trafficking organization in Colombia to rescue over 100 kidnapped children.
