Dear KAG: 20200526 Open Thread

And now for some inspirational music. Since we’re all ready to break out and all. 😁

And now for the nitty gritty of the Q Tree 5 minute, stand up, Tuesday morning meeting version of the Daily Thread.

Ahem.

Guidelines for posting and discussion on this site were outlined by our host, WolfM00n. Please, review them from time to time.

The discourse on this site is to be CIVIL – no name calling, baiting, or threatening others here is allowed. Those who are so inclined may visit Wolf’s other sanctuary, the U-Tree, to slog it out.

This site is a celebration of the natural rights endowed to humans by our Creator as well as those enshrined in the Bill of Rights adopted in the founding documents of the United States of America. Within the limits of law, how we exercise these rights is part of the freedom of our discussion.

Fellow tree dweller Wheatie gave us some good reminders on the basics of civility in political discourse:

  1. No food fights.
  2. No running with scissors.
  3. If you bring snacks, bring enough for everyone.

Psalm 67 (68): 2-25

Let God arise, and let his enemies be scattered: and let them that hate him flee from before his face. [3] As smoke vanisheth, so let them vanish away: as wax melteth before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God. [4] And let the just feast, and rejoice before God: and be delighted with gladness. [5] Sing ye to God, sing a psalm to his name, make a way for him who ascendeth upon the west: the Lord is his name. Rejoice ye before him: but the wicked shall be troubled at his presence,

[6] Who is the father of orphans, and the judge of widows. God in his holy place: [7] God who maketh men of one manner to dwell in a house: Who bringeth out them that were bound in strength; in like manner them that provoke, that dwell in sepulchres. [8] O God, when thou didst go forth in the sight of thy people, when thou didst pass through the desert: [9] The earth was moved, and the heavens dropped at the presence of the God of Sina, at the presence of the God of Israel. [10] Thou shalt set aside for thy inheritance a free rain, O God: and it was weakened, but thou hast made it perfect.

[11] In it shall thy animals dwell; in thy sweetness, O God, thou hast provided for the poor. [12] The Lord shall give the word to them that preach good tidings with great power. [13] The king of powers is of the beloved, of the beloved; and the beauty of the house shall divide spoils. [14] If you sleep among the midst of lots, you shall be as the wings of a dove covered with silver, and the hinder parts of her back with the paleness of gold. [15] When he that is in heaven appointeth kings over her, they shall be whited with snow in Selmon.

[16] The mountain of God is a fat mountain. A curdled mountain, a fat mountain. [17] Why suspect, ye curdled mountains? A mountain in which God is well pleased to dwell: for there the Lord shall dwell unto the end. [18] The chariot of God is attended by ten thousands; thousands of them that rejoice: the Lord is among them in Sina, in the holy place. [19] Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive; thou hast received gifts in men. Yea for those also that do not believe, the dwelling of the Lord God. [20] Blessed be the Lord day by day: the God of our salvation will make our journey prosperous to us.

[21] Our God is the God of salvation: and of the Lord, of the Lord are the issues from death. [22] But God shall break the heads of his enemies: the hairy crown of them that walk on in their sins. [23] The Lord said: I will turn them from Basan, I will turn them into the depth of the sea: [24] That thy foot may be dipped in the blood of thy enemies; the tongue of thy dogs be red with the same. [25] They have seen thy goings, O God, the goings of my God: of my king who is in his sanctuary.

As always, prayers for the fight against that which seeks to enslave us are welcome. Via con Dios.

    1. Yes, it would explain a lot, and it would be enough to open the eyes of EVERYONE, even if they’re hooked up to an IV drip full of saline and crushed blue pills.

The problem is, how do you prove it?

Kassie asked if it would shock us to know… it wouldn’t shock me at all, but as far as I can tell, she’s just hypothesizing, I didn’t see that she had any evidence to support the idea.

IMO, they deserve each other! And that is all the energy I’m going to waste in this irrelevant pair! LOL
But, I agree about Trump knowing the story or he wouldn’t be tweeting. However, it IS a message to other network personalities that might be going down the same slanderous road…”you’d better have a squeaky clean history or it’s going to be revealed….think twice.“

      ____________

I’ve always wondered what a ‘pompatus’ is.

The only time I’ve ever heard the word used in a sentence is in The Joker by the Steve Miller Band 😁

      .

Some people call me the space cowboy, yeah
Some call me the gangster of love
      Some people call me Maurice
‘Cause I speak of the pompatus of love

      People talk about me, baby
Say I’m doing you wrong, doing you wrong
Well, don’t you worry, baby, don’t worry
‘Cause I’m right here, right here, right here, right here at home…

      1. Huh… from the Urban Dictionary:

        …………………..
        pompatus

In 1954, Vernon Green of the Medallions wrote a song called “The Letter” in which he used the words “puppetutes of love”, a combination of “puppets” and “prostitutes”.

A puppetute was a woman of your fantasies who would do anything you wanted. Steve Miller, who sometimes imported words from other songs (including his own) into his lyrics, misheard the word as “pompitous” or “pompatus” and added “pompitous of love” and “pompatus of love” to his songs, “Enter Maurice” and “The Joker”, respectively.

The words were later used as a title to a movie, “The Pompatus of Love”. “Enter Maurice” also uses the words “sweet words of epismetology” (close to an actual dictionary word, epistomology), which was probably a misheard version of another Green-invented word, “pizmotality”, words so secret they can only be revealed to a lover.

“My dearest darling, come closer to Maurice so I can whisper sweet words of epismetology in your ear and speak to you of the pompatus (pompitous) of love” (from “Enter Maurice”, by Steve Miller)

  2. DP….that was the most unusual, and to me hot and restrictive, orchestra conductor’s garb I’ve ever seen. Is there a story about it that you know?
Another minor point that caught my attention was the female percussionist who was out of uniform with her striped top. I know that there is usually a fairly cut-and- dry dress code the musicians sign at the beginning of the season ( at least in my, albeit limited, experience), and especially so if the performance is filmed. Females often get away with a lot (too much, IMO), whereas the males stick with the tux/tails look. For me, the striped top was out of place.
In our symphony, the Board is responsible to set the standards but it’s the Concert Master (Mistress in our case) that enforces them. Is that your experience?
But having said all that…liked the music a lot!

    1. Conductors can wear whatever they want, usually. I’ve seen brocade waistcoats on Friday and Saturday evening, black shirts on Sunday afternoons, etc.

The orchestra dress code is by union contract, as far as I know. Tradition, though, is gentlemen in white tie and tails on Friday and Saturday evening, dark suits with a tie on Sundays. Ladies in concert black…although I’ve seen liberties taken. They’ll push as much as they can get away with.

And then, on New Year’s Eve…the ladies of the SLSO wear anything black tie. The assistant concertmaster one year was in lime green to the floor. That year, the ladies of the chorus were invited to wear formals in any color. Mine was pink.

      Good times.

          1. Vaughan-Williams’s “Fantasia On A Theme Of Thomas Tallis” is absolutely brilliant. It was used as the background music in a video about the (recent) British Monarchy [just found out I can see “Burg Teck” from our upstairs windows on a clear day]. It is scored for two orchestras and a string quartet, and is probably the epitome of mid-20th-century English composition (Elgar notwithstanding)… I’m kind of partial to Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields’ recording of this, but this one is also spectacular “The BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andrew Davis at Gloucester Cathedral, where in 1910, it was played and conducted for the first time by composer Ralph Vaughan Williams.”:

            1. Oops, senior moment there. The background music for the royals video was “Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus”, also an excellent piece. Don’t know why I got confused (not enough covfefe, I suspect); I’ve played them both… Wish I could play the Lark Ascending, but the violinists have all the luck… Iona Brown of ASMF probably did it the best… Good excuse to buy great stereo equipment to hear the lark ascending out of the basses tremolo… first time I heard it, I thought it was rumble, wow, and flutter from my turntable…

Here’s a YouTube of Dives and Lazaurus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdwxd5YO3dg

      2. Musician unions are not common here…nor are salaried musicians. They are all independent contractors. Once the Music Director has the season schedule determined (And I’m only repeating what he told me), he informs the Concert Mistress how many flutes, horns, maybe a harp Or a tuba for a particular piece, etc. She then sends out a “blast” notice with the selected piece, the date, number of rehearsals, and how many of each instrument required. It’s up to the musicians to “sign up” if Available or interested.
Most in our 3-state area play in several orchestras and sometimes there are conflicts…Greenville, NC, for example only has Sunday afternoon concerts, and occasionally at the Xmas holidays other cities want Sunday concerts. It’s not unusual for a musician to drive 2 hours to play in a concert and I know the Board here is exploring the idea of host families so they have the option of staying the night.
There are a fair number of musicians (almost local), that play in just about every concert, but there are always new faces.
I love the colorful and romantic ball gowns on the female musicians in the Andre Rieu Orchestra. Somehow it makes the music better! LOL

          1. You know, now I’m going to have to check about the Union thing….was told not by a Board member… but these musicians play in Augusta, Ga, Columbia , Charleston, and Aiken, SC, Greenville, NC and Charlotte, NC (some fair-sized cities) and I’m thinking surely some of those have to be union.
And, I didn’t mean to imply the seasons aren’t planned far out but often a Featured artist Cancels because of a conflict so the entire program has to be changed , this season was cut short so there’s a scramble to reschedule Dates, venue and artists (especially international flights involved), etc.

      1. And remember that Tedros’ specialty was malaria research… I wonder if he ever heard of that effective treatment that has been used for over 70 years now… what’s it called… I had it, just a second ago, it was right on the tip of my tongue…

        Hydra… hydro… hydrochlorox… hyrdroquinochlor… HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE, that’s it!

And I just searched Teddy’s name on duckduckgo for Tedros as I did a few weeks ago when looking up information to email to a friend, making the point that Teddy (like Fauci) knows all about HCQ.

When you search Tedros, it brings up a photo and an abreviated Wiki entry on the right hand side of the screen, where it USED to say Teddy was an anti-malarial research specialist or words to that effect…

But those words are GONE now.

You have to click on the Wiki link to find that info now, it’s not part of his ‘bio’ anymore.

    1. It kind of amazes me that the city provides these unsupervised concrete death and disfigurement traps for the public, and yet we haven’t been allowed to have a high dive at the public pool since the early 1980s…

Pretty sure a public pool with multiple lifeguards and a high dive is abut a thousand times less dangerous 😂

      Liked by 3 people

      1. The high dive thing was insurance related. You have to have 12 feet of water under one or the rates go through the roof even being grandfathered in. We had to take ours down due to the insurance costs which were twice what the rest of the pool was. It’s back up now that the deep end has been deepened.

          ___________

Sounds like a flimsy made up excuse to shut down high dives all over the country.

I don’t remember how deep our local YMCA public pool was, at least 10 feet and maybe 12.

You couldn’t hit the bottom even if you tried, no matter how you went off the board. It wasn’t a platform either, it was a springboard, just just the two low dives on either side of the high dive.

Sometimes after cannon balling or doing a sleeper (or a can-opener), or even an actual dive, we would then swim down to the bottom to touch the drain before surfacing.

It had to be more than 10 feet, because most of us didn’t like doing it, it hurt our ears to go that deep.

But you definitely had to swim downward to get to it, you could never hit the bottom accidentally, from going off the high dive.

      2. Yes. The skate parks are usually private n public partnerships here but its true. The playgrounds are designed now to just let kids fall without the extra safety bc they might get caught and hurt by the safety guardrails. I was told that by my city’s parks director.

        Liked by 2 people

        1. You could get killed easily, just by hitting your face on any one of those many concrete edges all over the place.

The very nature of what they’re doing causes people to fall, and they’re landing on concrete, not water.

It has to be a thousand times more dangerous than jumping into water.

If the issue with diving boards was insurance related, imagine what the insurance would be on a concrete skate park?

She was the one at fault for not leashing her dog, but she placed false charges on someone else. It’s exactly what the Dems in Congress and the media do. These people are a danger to the country.

I can’t fathom the degree of poor judgment. She knew she was being recorded. And, if the cops came, did she think they would believe her? Was she going to put the leash on the dog before they got there? But again, it was being recorded, so there was evidence against her. I wonder about her mental state.
