For your listening enjoyment, I offer this composition from Infraction, titled simply ‘Epic Cinematic Background’:

Visual Descriptions for our dear Zoe, and for anyone else who may find them helpful:

Header Image: A young lady warrior is standing in a field of tall grasses, looking over her shoulder at us. Behind her in the distance, an enormous Tree dominates the landscape. Her long white hair and the tall grasses, are blowing in the wind. Her dark green velvet embroidered tunic has a band of metal armor at the hips, which comes to a V in the front and back. She has metal armor on her shoulders and forearm, and the wind is blowing the long dark green cape that is attached at her shoulders. She is holding a sword in her right hand and in her left hand is a round metal object that appears to be giving off a soft blue glow.

The enormous Tree is in the valley below her and there are gigantic arched structures built into the side of it’s trunk. White birds are flying out from the Tree, towards us. A few small structures dot the landscape around the base of the Tree, along with a forest of smaller trees. Beyond the valley, there are rays of the sun casting light on the Tree and the warrior, as the sun emerges from a distant mountain range. There are white clouds moving through a blue sky.

Second Image: A stone pathway leads up to tall double doors, built into the side of an enormous tree trunk. The doors are arched and covered in ornate carvings. There are a few small points of light in the doors, giving off a slight blue glow. Rays of sunlight illuminate the path in front of the doors.

Third Image: Is an interior room with a high ceiling and a large stone fireplace. There is an open sided sleigh couch with throw pillows and a fuzzy throw. There are stuffed chairs nearby and a coffee table. A staircase made of logs and large branches is on one side of the room.

Fourth Image: Is President Trump, with a solemn look on his face, looking intently at someone or something.

Congratulations to our British cousins on their Brexit Vote! There is hope for the UK after all.

Still hoping that the Storm knocks out some of the Enemedia crapweasels!

  1. Hi all. Need some advice re: a home repair issue.

    Here’s the background…

Our home central heating air is out. Called a “reputable” HVAC company to come service it. Repairman came and determined the issue was the circuit board had gone bad and needed to be replaced.

He told me the circuit board would cost us $650.

    WTF?? 😲😡😲

So, I asked him if I could see the board he wanted to use as the replacement. Then I took a picture of it…esp. the packaging and labeling. Then I asked him how long it would take to swap out the boards. He said 15-20 mins. (Remember this).

Then I told him we couldn’t do the repair right now because of the cost, and I paid the $79 fee for him to come over, analyze the problem, and give us an estimate.

After he left I went online and this is what I found… is a pic of the new circuit board….

    Guess what??

Arnold’s Service Co., a HVAC parts supplier, is selling these for $118. 😲

So, the co. I called is marking up the cost of the replacement board by $532
on a job that takes 15-20 min!! 🤬🤬🤬

    1. That is standard HVAC, plumbing, electrical practice. I repaired my clothes drier for $32 in parts. Had I called a tech in it would have been a $250 minimum repair. They are all crooks.

    2. Buy the board and install it, its not rocket surgery once diagnosed (as I’m sure you know)……

My guess is that their cost is even less.

…..then call the company and just ask what their cost is for the board. Explain to them what you found and threaten them with a relentless trolling campaign if they don’t refund the $79 service call (which they wont), then you can get on with publicly shaming them which may be worth the $79 anyways

      1. Parts suppliers provide catalogs to vendors.

The vendors catalogs have a heavy paper page, generally right under the cover, perforated close to the binding, which reads in large print “TEAR THIS PAGE OUT” (or similar), and explains that the price is listed in the catalog are “marked up”.

Parts manufacturers need to make money.

        Suppliers need to make money.

        Vendors need to make money.

And the customer needs to be able to “see” the price (even though it’s ridiculously marked-up).

          1. Yes.
They all do it, but “reasonable”?
That is up to the discretion of the end-user..

In any event, it is a poor, and potentially costly, prospect to utilize “parts changing” in place of “troubleshooting”.

            1. Perhaps my response was a bit harsh, certainly the diagnosis was worth the $79 service charge and suggesting protest trolling was bit much and leave it at that. I still call into question a 300% mark up based on a retail price found by FG&C. I agree with “buyer beware” and “what the market will bare” arguments that can be raised in this situation, but I also feel its everyone’s right to question what they pay for anything right or wrong (Not saying you don’t agree with that) Guess I will leave the final word on this to any HVAC people in our tree.

      2. Would NOT troll the repair company. They have a right to make a profit. Service calls are an expense.

The technician did NOT have to show the board OR let NYGUY take a pic.

Me thinks the repair company validated there being reputable.

        Capitalism IS great.

Repairing ourselves or another company IS freedom.

No need to dog out the reputable company. They did NOTHING wrong.

    3. Are you asking if you have an ethical question because you photo’d the replacement circuit board? You paid the guy to diagnose the problem and give you an estimate to fix it. Presumably ‘any’ estimate includes details about the fix. I don’t think there’s an ethical question.

Besides … technology took away our decision to manually repair many things vs pay repairman. Did WE get a say?

If you know how to install the new board, order it and do it. You’re simply manually replacing a ‘part’. I wish I had skills to do that kind of thing.

      Liked by 7 people

      1. I agree, if that’s the problem buy it and replace it if you feel comfortable doing it. I am sure that the company that came out probably isn’t to far off what it cost for the job if there a repetable company. Its capitalism everyone has to make a profit, your just doing the labor yourself the HVAC guys not going to care he’s already made $$ on the service call.
Good luck let us know how it goes.

    4. I believe CMinTN is in the HVAC field-hope he replies to this.

      Now me spitballing’:

Refer to users manual “troubleshooting” guide (may be found online); also YouTube videos.

I’m pretty sure that the LED (lower left-hand corner?) Will flash a sequence (IF there is a problem; if not it should stay “steady red”.). The sequence codes SHOULD be on a sticker/decal inside the control panel, or you may be able to look them up online.

It is possible that the unit may be able to be “reset” (a term that I have come to know as a “hard reset”), which is done by “opening” the main disconnect, wait a minute, then “close”it (NOTE: Think of the terms “open” and “closed” as “off” and “on”, respectively, when it comes to electrical switches).

You shouldn’t need to open the disconnect in order to open the control panel (a built-in safety feature), and then with the panel door open, you should be able to manipulate the locking mechanism in order to close the disconnect with the panel door open, so that you can observe the LED.

      Hope this helps.

    6. Solid advice through out.

Not HVAC smart. But have repaired plenty of stuff.

      Here’s what I would do.
      1. Watch a couple YT on your HVAC issue board replacement.
There may be ESD issues too ground yourself while handling the new board. Sequence of steps may matter.

If not on YT, search the problem by your HVAC system model…

      2. Buy the board.

      3. Save money.

      Good luck.

      1. I’m all for do it yourself repair, if that’s possible…mainly for the cost factor. But, I’m going to play Devil’s advocate because I did this for years in the hospital field.
First, there is a need for such service and you are fortunate if it’s right in your immediate area.
        Employer must..
        1. Advertise services…even telephone listings cost, but now add mailers, newspapers, websites, etc
        2. Buy, maintain and run vehicle service to get to your house.
        3. Ditto any equipment for all types of services…there might be several thousands of dollars in inventory in each service van.
        4. Cost of employees…training, salary, benefits,…and not just in -the – field employees. Think office staff, bookkeeping.
        5. Cost of physical location…office maintenance and equipment, utilities, Taxes, annual permits, office supplies, additional parking area for company vehicles
I think you get the point….somehow, somewhere a service business has to be able to factor in all these things to stay in business and make a profit. This is what you pay for when you have them do the work. If you can bypass them and install, legally and safely, and save all that….great! But, please don’t think everyone that is in business is a crook because they have to pay for the hidden costs.

    7. Order the part, and replace it yourself. Tons of Youtube videos on how to do this stuff. Hubby does this all the time.
Or, buy the part and find someone handy and trustworthy to put it in.

      1. Yes, a mom-and-pop HVAC service guy who does not sell units will often do such jobs cheap.

The “board is out” diagnosis is often used to get people to get a completely new unit when their unit is old.

    8. Buy part yourself. If not comfortable doing own replacement, look on Nextdoor App and find AC people recommended by your neighbors. Call them for quotes. I’ve found an excellent sprinkler man and plumber that way.

    10. FG&C, Not trying to beat this one too far in the ground.

There is always a chance the board won’t fix the problem. That said, I’d buy the card, install it and save money.

    11. I just had a similar situation, and I fired the repair guy.

Six years ago, the company sold me a gas furnace. Two years ago, I had a $200 service call. Last year it was a $600 part replacement. This year it was $800 for another part. I told him to get bent.

I understand the whole supply chain, middle-man, overhead, etc. But a six-year-old appliance shouldn’t require a new part costing hundreds of dollars every year. That’s robbery, and I told him so. He also wanted $240 just for coming out and doing nothing. I said sure, I’d pay it, but I’d tell everybody in the county he was a thief. The bill magically dropped $100.

I am replacing (myself) the entire heating system with electric baseboard heaters. If one goes out, it’s $50 to replace. I don’t want anything to do with heater repair guy again.

The city here went to the homeless community when they had to be moved so that the structure of the tunnel where they were living could be redone, and tried to match the people up with available services/shelters, etc. The homeless were having none of it. I’m not exactly sure where they are at the moment other than in the old Greyhound Bus station which is up the street from where they were before (with close access to the hot lunch kitchens), but you have to go looking for them here. It’s not a solution, or ideal, but better than what some other places are dealing with.

          1. It’s entirely possible. I have no idea what’s up with the case – just mentioning a VERY COMMON reason for pardons. Pardons are often because of a miscarriage of justice that the prosecution will not reverse because the prosecutor is political and it would “look bad”. But sometimes an outside org will get involved, find credible reversal of evidence or testimony, and even the investigators will claim the perp is likely innocent, but for some political reason, nobody will act. PARDONS become a way out of the bind.

I’ve known a number of cases of false accusations of rape and sexual harassment. Everybody buys in and then it turns out to be bogus. A lot of surprised faces when it’s over. Not saying it’s happening here – just possible.

  18. Yes he did! Our VSG Pres called Comcast, “Commiecast”!

    I think this is Notable.

When has Pres Trump used the word “Commie” before?

    ….Trying to remember.

I don’t remember him saying it before, but might have missed it.

    1. I don’t think he was calling Comcast Commiecast because he started the sentence with “Both” or meaning two. The both he was referring to were MSNBC and CNN.

      1. Didn’t come out here, but on his Twitter page, the numbers on the jerseys of the football players in the lower right hand corner are 19 and 45 (left and right, respectively; click on tweet to view).
