Dear KAG: 20191113 Open Thread

Morning all. Hopefully, your pre-holidays weeks are going well. It’s that time of year when roaring fires become cozy beacons…oh, let’s face it. A solar minimum has us using the Crock Pots way more than normal. Please, stay warm.

And now, how about something from the American Revolution.

Okay, so here’s the deal. This is the open thread. This is where we all come to get the news that other Q tree inhabitants think is worth knowing and sharing. Please, post links to any “news” stories quoted, and ask for help if you are stumped as to how to do that. We’re a friendly lot. Someone will be with you shortly, and there is no reason to have to press one for English.

Free speech, and the open exchange and hashing out of ideas is not only allowed, but encouraged. If we all don’t use it, we’re going to lose it. A little incivility goes a long way, though. Everyone here has closely held convictions and values. Stepping on them might result in something like this:

There is absolutely no reason for infighting to result in burning down the tree, house up in the branches and all. Please, keep the tail feathers tucked and avoid lifting legs on the fire hydrants.

AND before hitting the “post” button, ask yourself if the words you use are reminiscent of the Alinsky method of isolating a target rather than actually fostering dialogue and discussion. Getting the MAGA movement to engage in infighting is one of the other side’s goals. Falling into that trap no matter the topic being discussed feeds the divisions, and the impression the other side wants to impose on us as being violent and all that goes with that characature.

And now for some house keeping:

There are a few rules here in the branches of the Q Tree. Our host, Wolfm00n, outlined them in a post on New Years Day. Please, review these rules from time to time.

Fellow tree dweller Wheatie gave us some good reminders on the basics of civility in political discourse:

  1. No food fights.
  2. No running with scissors.
  3. If you bring snacks, bring enough for everyone.

Steve suggests – to be accurate – no shooting at the nuclear weapons, but to be safe about it, don’t event point firearms toward them. I, Deplorable Patriot, bossy chick that I am, request no teasing the animals, pets and wildlife alike.

Teasing and trolling the lefties and their bastions, on the other hand is a moral imperative. Found this on FB.

In the eternal fight against the forces of evil and darkness, unceasing prayer is always needed.

Today’s Gospel is St. Luke’s version of the ten lepers asking Jesus for pity before he cured them, but the reading that speaks to our times comes from the book of Wisdom of the Helenistic Canon:

WIS 6:1-11
Hear, O kings, and understand;
learn, you magistrates of the earth’s expanse!
Hearken, you who are in power over the multitude
and lord it over throngs of peoples!
Because authority was given you by the Lord
and sovereignty by the Most High,
who shall probe your works and scrutinize your counsels.
Because, though you were ministers of his kingdom, you judged not rightly,
and did not keep the law,
nor walk according to the will of God,
Terribly and swiftly shall he come against you,
because judgment is stern for the exalted–
For the lowly may be pardoned out of mercy
but the mighty shall be mightily put to the test.
For the Lord of all shows no partiality,
nor does he fear greatness,
Because he himself made the great as well as the small,
and he provides for all alike;
but for those in power a rigorous scrutiny impends.
To you, therefore, O princes, are my words addressed
that you may learn wisdom and that you may not sin.
For those who keep the holy precepts hallowed shall be found holy,
and those learned in them will have ready a response.
Desire therefore my words;
long for them and you shall be instructed.

As always, prayers for the fight against that which seeks to enslave us are welcome.

And now, on to the day’s news…..

    1. “call out of work” . . . nah! What for? I do want I want at work. I can show up late or leave early without penalty. No problem with a five hour lunch. And besides, my boss is with me and he’s picking up the tab.

        1. Yes, it’s an offshore tax haven.

          From the entry:

The 2012–2013 Cypriot financial crisis was an economic crisis in the Republic of Cyprus that involved the exposure of Cypriot banks to overleveraged local property companies, the Greek government-debt crisis, the downgrading of the Cypriot government’s bond credit rating to junk status by international credit rating agencies, the consequential inability to refund its state expenses from the international markets[1][2] and the reluctance of the government to restructure the troubled Cypriot financial sector.[3]

On 25 March 2013, a €10 billion international bailout by the Eurogroup, European Commission (EC), European Central Bank (ECB) and International Monetary Fund (IMF) was announced, in return for Cyprus agreeing to close the country’s second-largest bank, the Cyprus Popular Bank (also known as Laiki Bank), imposing a one-time bank deposit levy on all uninsured deposits there, and possibly around 48% of uninsured deposits in the Bank of Cyprus (the island’s largest commercial bank). A minority proportion of it held by citizens of other countries (many of whom from Russia), who preferred Cypriot banks because of their higher interest on bank account deposits, relatively low corporate tax, and easier access to the rest of the European banking sector. This resulted in numerous insinuations by US and European media, which presented Cyprus as a ‘tax haven’ and suggested that the prospective bailout loans were meant for saving the accounts of Russian depositors.[4][5] No insured deposit of €100,000 or less would be affected.[6][7]

Nearly one third of Rossiya Bank’s cash ($1 billion) was frozen in Cypriot accounts during this crisis.[8]

      1. I wonder if these guys paid Taxes on all this money.

The IRS considers it ‘income’ whenever there is an incoming wire of funds.

Doesn’t matter if it’s a flow-through…like for the purpose of laundering it…if it comes into your account, you have to declare it on your tax return.

I hope Mnuchin’s money sleuths are all over this.

          1. But, as an ex-pat, I have the “pleasure” of filing paperwork for two different countries. The USA is one of only two countries that taxes worldwide income, regardless of origin. The other (IIRC) is Lesotho, not exactly a financial powerhouse. As such, Biden, Heinz, Kerry, Piglosi, and the other fellow should all have been required to file paperwork, regardless if there were capital (or other) gains or not… There are free allowances, but their income/txn amounts FAR outstrip that.

Ironic, too, that Øbozo made things much uglier for us ex-pats… Then again, he made things much uglier for EVERYONE…

              1. AFAIK, the filing requirement remains, whether or not tax is due…

Unless the “free” limit isn’t exceeded (can’t remember the name… need more covefe, but not now, it’s really late here)… The exceptions are really, really low, something like 80K or so. The “second-generation-swindlers” take was far, far higher than that.

Some of the legal beagles or accountants can add a lot of info here…

      1. “Grok” means ‘understand’, basically.

It’s from the Heinlein book, ‘Stranger in a Strange Land’.

The word ‘grok’ actually means a little more than to just understand…it means to understand intuitively to the point of taking it in and becoming one with it.

    1. How can the woman claim we have a Republic and a Democracy in the same statement? Which one is it, Mrs. Speaker? Think mirror – no one is above the law – speak for yourself Mrs. Speaker!

Question: For what is President Trump to be held accountable? Being the best President ever?

There is no evidence he has committed a crime – in fact – there is no crime. This is a travesty of injustice – an inquiry looking for a crime – it is obvious the alleged witnesses witnessed nothing – what we witnessed is their hatred for the President and his policies.

I guess we must not interrupt an enemy when he is making a fool of himself – or rather – in the process of destroying himself.

    1. SD is SomeDunce of the tribe of Eeyore…

He is either “controlled opposition”, or not the SD of yore (I think that the real SD is being kept elsewhere, away from his post, maybe in a dank dark basement room, a lone lightbulb hanging from a moldy ceiling, trying in vain to cast light upon the decrepit excuse for a place to live and write. What little external brightness manages to peek into this lair is quickly extinguished by the darkness of the “monitors” keeping watch… drip… drip… drip… [shades of Cheech and Chong…”old man”…cough…”Old Man”… cough… “OLD MAN”….cough…Auuuugggghhhhhh]…

Don’t let him (and his cohort) get you down.

MAGA!!!!! GOD has this. And HE never lets HIS WORD come back void. And, as they USED to say OT, the closer you are over target, the heavier the flak (and the discouraging messages) become…

    1. “The planet Jupiter has a system of rings known as the rings of Jupiter or the Jovian ring system. It was the third ring system to be discovered in the Solar System, after those of Saturn and Uranus. It was first observed in 1979 by the Voyager 1 space probe[1] and thoroughly investigated in the 1990s by the Galileo orbiter.[2] It has also been observed by the Hubble Space Telescope and from Earth for several years.[3] Ground-based observation of the rings requires the largest available telescopes.[4]”
