Quarter Millionth (Moon Distance) Post

The Moon’s distance from Earth varies, but it it generally WITHIN a quarter of a million miles.

Here is the “technical stuff” behind “quarter million”. And one of the best pictorial demonstrations I have yet seen, of why “super moon” is actually a thing.

Lunar distance (LD or {\textstyle \Delta _{\oplus L}}), also called Earth–Moon distanceEarth–Moon characteristic distance, or distance to the Moon, is a unit of measure in astronomy. It is the average distance from the center of Earth to the center of the Moon. More technically, it is the mean semi-major axis of the geocentric lunar orbit. It may also refer to the time-averaged distance between the centers of the Earth and the Moon, or less commonly, the instantaneous Earth–Moon distance. The lunar distance is approximately 400 thousand kilometres (250 thousand miles).[1]

The mean semi-major axis has a value of 384,402 km (238,856 mi).[2] The time-averaged distance between Earth and Moon centers is 385,000.6 km (239,228.3 mi). The actual distance varies over the course of the orbit of the Moon, from 356,500 km (221,500 mi) at the perigee to 406,700 km (252,700 mi) at apogee, resulting in a differential range of 50,200 km (31,200 mi).[3]

Lunar distance is commonly used to express the distance to near-Earth object encounters.[4] Lunar distance is also an important astronomical datum; the precision of this measurement to a few parts in a trillion has useful implications for testing gravitational theories such as general relativity,[5] and for refining other astronomical values such as Earth mass,[6] Earth radius,[7] and Earth’s rotation.[8] The measurement is also useful in characterizing the lunar radius, the mass of the Sun and the distance to the Sun.

Millimeter-precision measurements of the lunar distance are made by measuring the time taken for light to travel between LIDAR stations on the Earth and retroreflectors placed on the Moon. The Moon is spiraling away from the Earth at an average rate of 3.8 cm (1.5 in) per year, as detected by the Lunar Laser Ranging Experiment.[9][10][11] By coincidence, the diameter of corner cubes in retroreflectors on the Moon is also 3.8 cm.[12][13]

Well, we just passed a quarter of a million posts, and it turns out that I made the quarter millionth one:

It was on THIS thread of Daughn’s:

We’ve come a long ways. We’re still kind of a mom-and-pop operation, but great things happen here.

Hmmmm. Where have I heard THAT before? *wink*

It is a genuine pleasure to spend time with you all here, helping to not only Make America Great Again, and to KEEP Making America Great, but also – very importantly – to Keep America Great! That will be the task of patriots long after we go to those balcony seats for the best view in the house. So let’s keep on making THEIR job as easy as we can.

Have a great day, people!

And we ain’t just barkin’ at the Moon this time!

          1. Thanks wolf. You have built a broad church. We tolerate and forgive each other’s transgressions like adults. I’m too potty mouthed for some, other are snappy if questioned but we get along because we all share a common set of values. Very hard to bring disparate personalities together . Grats

            1. Thank you! 😀

I need that big tent, ozzy! I try to hold up that free speech pole in the center, but I NEED people to offend and forgive around the edges, and everywhere in the middle, to uphold the whole thing! So you just keep being you, because I need you! Just the way you are!

(Seriously, I’ve been working on this problem last night and all day today in my head. Your post gave me the opportunity to dump the metaphoric model for all to see. Very grateful for this opportunity!!! ❤ )

              1. And, I would like to add to that—–>a place of enormous caring, sharing, affirmation, appreciation, encouragement….. (Ya know, like the way God WANTS it to be…) The way we humans are supposed to be towards one another. Too few places where that/ this is practiced nowadays. Why I thank God for Wolfie & Followers and for this place to which I come to frequently / every day.

Must admit—not much of that stuff going on in my physical life, and my people-population is about nil —(circumstances and all)—-but good-golly-Miss-Molly and OH MY GOD—–I come here and wallow (underlined) in all the good positiveness, lively back & forthing, deep caringness for one another, the stepping-on-toes and then right away readily apologizing…… the deep deep appreciation readily expressed for others’ efforts and contributions. The prayers so readily offered…

Yup. Definitely a very loving place to hang out.

THANK YOU ALL. [From me, daily-lurker who recently screwed up the courage to contribute—and got “liked” ! Neato. ] Have a great weekend everybody. xoxox–L.

  1. Supermoons may be real (and of course a result of the fact that things Up There [and down here too actually] follow Kepler’s laws), but they’re sure over-hyped on Fox News, probably other places as well. I generally ignore those stories. (Lunar eclipses, on the other hand, at least are somewhat infrequent, but not so much so I generally drop what I’m doing to see them. A solar eclipse, on the other hand, is a Big F-ing Deal.)

    1. Couple years ago while touring through a few states, detoured further north into Idaho to view the total eclipse. Sooooo very cool.

Transitioning to full eclispe was so nice. Total eclipse, only lasted a few minutes. Less than ten as I recall. Street light came on. Dogs were howling for awhile;-)

      Fantastic memory.

            1. Rather sure you are quite accurate. I recall total eclipse time varied on where the person was relative to the eclipse path center.

We were not in the in the center of the eclipse path.

Country highway (one lane each way) and a bit congested. Rather than fight traffic, whose to pull over, got the lawn chair out and enjoy the experience.

That’s true…but if I recall how those charts looked correctly, you don’t lose that much until you get pretty close to the edge of the totality path, then each incremental move closer to the edge results in a significant loss. In other words you could be halfway in towards the center of the path and get a LOT more than half the duration they see at the center.

    3. Agree about the over-hyping of super-moons. Fox is notorious for “adding value where none exists”.

I hesitate to call them flat out “Fake News” with guys like Tucker Carlson and Hannity doing their thing, but – yeah! I can sure see the signs of controlled opposition from 250,000 miles away! 😉

    4. The one a couple/few years ago was a full Solar eclipse about 2-3 miles south of where I live. I had been at Church, Adoration in fact, and ended up in a grocery store parking lot with a whole lot of other people. It was really awesome in a lot of ways, twilight at one thirty or so in the afternoon, and the sunlight coming back so fast. I did look up for the corona and the diamond ring effect.

There’s one coming up that’s going to be full solar in southern Illinois. I may have to make the trek.

    5. Solar eclipses are definitely a big deal. I read an astronomy book as a boy and it talked about solar eclipses, I was more than a little disappointed that the next solar eclipse wasn’t until 2017 which of course was roughly an eternity away.

But I never forgot about it and made sure to stick it on my electronic calendar even though it was many years in advance.

In early 2017 I saw the reminder pop up on my calendar and I told my wife we were going to go watch it. We found a good viewing spot that made sense for us, and we booked a hotel room over half a year in advance. Room rates were already running double the daily average for that date. We bought a 50 pack of the genuine ISO compliant eye shades – at that time you could only buy them in 50 packs but they were super cheap, and we wanted to know we had the genuine article. I told the rest of my family and they got interested in watching the eclipse as well, so we had plenty of eye shades for everyone.

We also bought a GPS enabled eclipse tracking app for the cell phone that would chime and notify at each contact point. It also had a simulation mode where you could simulate the eclipse event in advance based on your position.

I also made sure we had PLENTY of food, water, gas, cash, and supplies, not knowing what crazies may be out or up to… but no problems. The hotel was completely full but tenants were all quiet and respectful as people were anticipating the show the next day. The hotel gave every room a pack of Eclipse gum and a wrapped Moon Pie.

Totality was incredible. We were situated near a pond with geese, ducks, and other wildlife. The lights went out and they rushed back to a little island totally caught off-guard by nightfall. 360 degrees of dusk, was amazing. The moon itself was a dark gray surrounded by a bright blue and white corona, flowing like hair, against a midnight blue sky. One picture of the solar corona came out very well – like a giant cats eye in the sky – but even then it couldn’t capture the richness of the colors. We even observed the “shadow snakes” – we had a white blanket laid out and we could see them though there were incredibly faint, and though I tried there was no hop the camera on my phone could distinguish them. They looked like ripples of water flowing across the blanket, and had a distinct flow and direction to them. Alas, totality was too short even in a prime viewing spot.

Something about that solar event seemed to signal that things were changing. It seemed as it a transition had happened that I was perceiving but didn’t understand. It was most obvious in the news I was reading about the Trump administration – going from “chaos” to seeing the White House on its feet, not REACTING to things and being on the defense, but finally WINNING while on the offensive. There were still huge evil battles to face – Las Vegas – but more now Trump was moving things to where he could win the battles on his terms. The ground had suddenly shifted under everyone’s feet.

The Harvest Moon is my very favorite – lotsa good memories of watching it rise through the years. It seems very early date-wise this year, but I will celebrate in its light tonight.

Just thought of a funny moon story. When my Granddaughter was 3, one cold January night as we were getting into bed she said, “Mima, let’s wake up tonight and go look at La Luna.”

“OK Clara,” I responded 🙄 thinking that’d be the end of it.

Sure enough at 3am she shook both of us awake “Mima! Papa! La Luna! La Luna!”

We put on robes, slippers, hats & mittens to go outside and say hello to La Luna. Fifteen minutes later we were back in bed, and she’s never asked again 😍

Al-Qaeda has turned against Iran, but “al-Qaeda” in Syria is involved in elaborate kabuki that will prevent another Iraq.

    Correct.

Everyone needs to memorize the following facts:

The Founding Fathers COMMISSIONED a semiautomatic rifle called the Belton Flintlock. It was to be used by the Continental Army.

Therefore, when the Second Amendment was written, the Founders knew fully well that semiautomatic rifles existed and would continue to be improved.

These weapons ARE covered by the Second Amendment

For unknown reasons, in some browsers the tweets in these posts display best if you click on the post instead of viewing it on the main page. You can skim the titles and summaries, and click the links if they are of interest. Keep in mind, many of these reports are products of the Fake News, so although they will be what people are hearing and talking about, there is no guarantee any one of them is necessarily correct, and we have had cases of outright lies make it onto these pages, especially about President Trump.

I literally got goosebumps as I read this one – There was an elite Sayeret Matkal veteran, the Israeli equivalent of Delta Force, on board Mohammed Atta’s hijacked plane. He was trained in airplane hijacking scenarios and airport security breaches, spoke conversational Arabic, and was an expert in hand to hand combat and improvised weapons. Of all the passengers, he was possibly the most likely to have been able to have thwarted the first plane’s hijacking. Strangely, there was a terrorist who had perfectly booked the seat behind him in his blind spot, and slit his throat immediately when the hijacking began, while he was probably distracted by Atta and his accomplice, who had booked the seats in front of him. Again, it can be coincidence, but it also makes me wonder if the hijackers had much more detailed intelligence on the passenger manifests and the seating charts, and just who those people on the manifest were and the potential threats they posed to the operation, as they prepared their attack. And you know where they would have gotten that from. Also the Sayeret Matkal soldier was also the genius billionaire founder of internet start up Akamai. Also interesting, the flight attendant who called in the hijacking noted which seat he was in on the phone call, when she appraised ground control that a passenger had his throat slashed. I would imagine she would just say a passenger had his throat slashed and was dead, and that would be it. The exact seat number hardly seems important by comparison, or something an amygdala would focus in on when looking at a dead body in the midst of a hijacking. That they know the seat number almost makes me wonder if somebody on the ground asked her for the seat number, because they were curious of the progression of an exact plan and the status of any threats that had been identified to it.

I watched the movie 411 – The Hunted, based on the 411 book series. It is about the many mysterious disappearances in the wilderness, especially in our national park systems, which carry with them strange elements which could be viewed as almost paranormal. It was very well done, as the narrator, a former Police Officer, detailed a series of experienced hunters who went out to into the wilderness on hunts, and either disappeared completely in places where there the whole area was searched and no trace could be found from firearms to clothes, or they disappeared strangely, only to have their belongings seemingly placed elsewhere years later, as if someone or something in the woods had kept them and placed them there.

It began with an older guy who went a short ways into a small area of woods with friends to sit and hunt deer which were pushed to him by some walkers. He never came out, and no trace was ever found, despite the area bounded by roads was divided into grids and searched twice. The Police concluded he must have gotten a ride out, though it is pretty clear from his family’s reactions he did not. One friend described hearing a strange sound in the woods in front of him (his friend was to his side), as if a metal trap had clamped shut, and he seemed too disturbed to even discuss it at length or describe it in detail. Oddly, the narrator, interviewing the lead investigator on the case, revealed the FBI had sent out two observers who took detailed notes and observed the entire search, even though FBI does not handle simple missing persons cases, and especially missing hunters, in an isolated town. He implied the FBI may know there is some sort of issue, this may have met some criteria they are aware of which brought them out to this case, but not any others, and they are trying to figure out what is going on as well. 40 miles away, a few days later another older man who lived in the woods disappeared similarly from his house while his wife was out at a social function.

Then he details three people who all disappeared with no trace despite detailed searches, near a lookout area, in separate incidents in the Sierras, while a fourth unidentified set of skeletal remains was found in the same area. Then he goes on to a hunter who took some pack animals to a hunting camp in the wilderness, was supposed to hike to a nearby cache of items and hike back, but his last GPS coordinate showed he had inexplicably left the path he should have followed. There was a sudden snowstorm, and they began a search, but saw no tracks. Several miles away, in an area which had already been searched, they found his boots neatly placed together. Months later somebody found his pack over 9 miles from his starting point, within sight of houses, neatly placed against a tree with his bow, and all his food and valuables, as well as a Ruger Redhawk 44 mag, untouched inside the pack. Nearby on a rock was a thermos cup (it was unclear if it was his) and an empty energy drink bottle, which made it look as if someone carried it there, set it down, and then sat and had an energy drink before disappearing. A ways away they found a polished skull at a camp placed under a tree, which turned out to be his, and they found his pelvis buried in another place nearby, though they never found the feet.

Then he took the last 20 minutes or so to relate the story of hunters in California who went to an isolated camp, and were besieged by what appeared to be a group of Bigfoot, and apparently large low-flying lights in the sky which seemed related. He plays the recordings of their sounds, which sound strangely like primitive speech mixed with grunting, whooping, and simian laughter, and then one of the hunters relates the time a two foot long, three inch wide cylinder of light came floating through the camp a few feet off the ground, seemingly under intelligent control, and then drifted off. He finishes that by relating that during the major forest fire which devastated that entire area, the woods around that camp were strangely spared any damage at all as everything else was burned to the ground.

Finally, he relates the story of a woman whose son was at band practice on the football field of their school when a bright light was seen hovering over a small forest in their suburban area. At the same time, his mother was bow hunting in that forest, and from her tree stand saw a Predator-camouflaged-like, transparent, blurry creature moving through the trees above ground in front of her tree stand, like a big invisible orangutan, reaching out to a nearby tree and slowly shifting its weight over to it. She did not panic or try to leave, as she said she would have normally, and actually forgot about the incident after it happened until her son’s story made her remember. She later found she had taken a picture with a cell phone (which she did not remember), but the electronics malfunctioned and the image came out blurred on one side, with what looked like a close-up of hair on the other, over-exposed, and of a strange super-small pixel count that her camera should not have been able to produce. I only post it as Q has said the real truth would send almost everyone to the hospital and leave them unable to cope for the rest of their lives. I have no idea if this is related, but it sounds intriguing.

Here is an old article with a headline that would have made you roll your eyes back then, but which now makes you wonder which is more likely – they wrote a ridiculous headline nobody would believe that just happened to touch on topics which are strangely current today, or they were telling the truth back then, and we were all unaware that every ridiculous claim they made was the truth. Headline is “Was Aaron Swartz Killed By An
MIT Satanic Child Porn Ring? ” It implies Reddit Co-founder Aaron Swartz wasn’t under fire and committed suicide for stealing journal articles MIT didn’t even own, but rather he was killed because that media lab he broke into was hosting child-porn, and he may have stolen it to give it to someone. Now we know, Jeffrey Epstein was a huge contributor to their Media lab, and all around him are allegations of satanic child abuse and videography for purposes of blackmail. And suicide hangings, such as with Swartz seem to be a preferred method of execution by Cabal.

  11. OK – this is actually an interesting moment.

First of all, an explanation of the blog that most may not know, but which I see from the “crow’s nest”.

We have a couple of folks on here who are not necessarily “flat earth” supporters, but could be described as “standard model doubters”. They’re obviously shy, and don’t want to get beaten up, but sometimes they express their doubts a wee bit, and I don’t mind that at all. It’s hard for me to convince people of “sphericity” if they already believe it – right? 😉 So – you must then realize – these people otherwise pass “Wolf’s extreme vetting”.

The trouble is, most flat earth proponents DON’T pass “Wolf’s extreme vetting”, because of reasons of DISRUPTION. There is “holding up the big tent of free speech”, but there is also “lighting it on fire”. As somebody who watched the “flat earth fights” on Gab, I know that GAB is the place for that – not here. To bring the flat earth fight here would require moderation that would end up where we started. Why go through that RIGHT NOW?

    Yeah, think about that.

The flat earth sideshow fulfills satanic deceptions. Make NO MISTAKE.

It’s a rough decision, but I just can’t afford flat earth fights here. Go up to the Gab layer for that. Here is the URL:

    https://dissenter.com/discussion/begin-extension?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwqth.wordpress.com%2F2019%2F09%2F13%2Fquarter-millionth-moon-distance-post%2F#inception-comment

I’ve actually studied flat earth posters on Gab, in part because of my interests in free speech and because the main dissemination points of flat earth memes seemed tied to certain antisemites I was testing myself against RE free speech. Suddenly, they brought in FLAT EARTH. I wanted to understand WHERE it was coming from and WHY. It seemed very sudden and SHILL from those particular posters. Very PRO. Something was not right. Of course they convinced others, but the origination points – THEY were very suspect.

Much of it seemed to be tied to opposing Space Force, “Trump’s new NASA”, etc. I found that interesting.

I dug deeper, and found that it was tied to an INFILTRATOR of the 9/11 Truth movement. Again – very interesting.

Anyway, back to my point. We have a flat earth proponent in the bin right now – one who will NEVER pass vetting, but who said the following:

    *****************

Earth is not a globe and space does not exist. The earth is flat. We have been lied to about most everything we know growing up.

Earth is flat and there is a huge dome over us and the sun and moon are under the dome and barely 100 miles over our heads.

The sun is a light and the moon is another kind of light…but it is only a light. It is not a rock and dirt ball you can walk on.

    *****************

Yup. He or she gets ONE FREE POST on here, because we CAN afford that.

It’s worth thinking about HOW MUCH have we been deceived? WHAT have we been deceived about?

Is it THIS? Or something ELSE?

Ask questions. Challenge assumptions. I have re-learned a lot of fascinating basic physics by challenging flat earth memes, and I may do a post on that soon.

Yes, I can even get some use out of this. There ARE deceptions out there. WHAT IF this poster is right?

What parts of what they say are true? But what might be cunning truths framed to point the WRONG WAY? (which is a satanic specialty).

Basic astronomy is always worth re-thinking. So is basic truth. And basic lies.

    Interesting times. Ask WHY NOW?

I have a post coming on what I’ve realized about division, and it will BLOW YOUR MINDS.

    Q is so on-target, it’s PAINFUL.

    1. I don’t believe there really are any true flat earthers. I’m pretty well convinced that other than the vanishingly small number of gullible people who will believe anything, at least 99.999% of all flat earth non-sense is straight up disinfo campaigns. Honestly I just block it and don’t even bother responding to it – and normally I prefer to keep files and gather intel on these kinds of actors!

I don’t believe that flat earthers actually exist.

They’re a convenient fiction for rhetorical purposes, and that’s about it.

The most telling thing is that there is no proposed flat earth geography with any predictive capabilities.

Though it sure would be nice to live on a planet free of all those blasted time zones.

      1. It makes incredible sense WHY the flat earth pot-stirrers and the 9/11 “anti-truthers” / truther-disrupters would be the same people.

9/11 was the biggest “Let’s You and Him Fight” since the last world war. But who is the final “blame-cast” done to? A SET of the most perfect and most infiltrated scapegoats, filled with bait-takers.

Like the Garrison cartoon with Trump pointing at the lineup – THEY ALL DID IT.

The whole thing was marvelous deception. All the usual suspects who benefited from it, only serves to mask the FINAL and most benefiting party – last stop before SATAN.

The reason I see it is because it was done to me as a kid – ENTRAPMENT. Devious stuff. Only this was far MORE DEVIOUS.

  12. Wow! Wolf, there are no coincidences…just God-incidences. So glad you found this great tree for us. I feel like that doll on the Island of Misfit toys who finally finds a home. ☺

Love this post. Been missing being here more regularly. I went back to school and oh Lordy, trying to keep up has kept me busy. I sneak off and on Twitter a lot, but here is where thought-provoking posts and comments reign.

  13. Utterly fantastic that the milestone was reached and you so happened to be the poster! You get confetti and a coupon for chikfila(somewhere)!

I am very glad you had the sense Wolf to make the cutting and plant this little sapling. And I am forever grateful to PHC for letting me know where to find everyone after the purge.

    two hundred fifty thousand
    is quite a milestone.

Thank you, Wolf, for this site that is truly a refuge. And thank you to all who post here and those who do the time-consuming work of authoring threads. I appreciate the warmth and mutual support that is allowed to flourish here, as well as the exchange of ideas from which I learn so much. The exercise of free speech within boundaries of who is allowed in is much appreciated! It keeps things from degenerating into havoc.

    Is #WhitePrivilege really a thing?

    No.

Brandy Norwood killed Awatef Aboudihaj on December 30, 2006. Norwood rear ended Aboudihaj at 65 miles per hour.

    No charges whatsoever were filed.

    “Insufficient evidence.”

Halle Berry crashed into Hetal Raythatha on February 23, 200o. Berry fled the scene, and the cops didn’t even go after her. Therefore it was impossible to prove whether or not she was driving drunk or high.

Hetal Raythatha suffered a broken arm.

    Berry got probation.

Football player Ray Rice knocked out his girlfriend Janay Palmer in an elevator.

Criminal charges were filed, but they were dropped when Rice agreed to undergo counseling.

The extremely white Duke lacrosse team was prosecuted based on total fabrications by a black woman.

All charges had to be dropped when it became clear that the accuser was lying.

California abolished cash bail because too many black arrestees were unable to pay.

Sacramento was very open about this.

One of the more striking examples of the lack of #WhitePrivilege is that Mother Jones doesn’t count the vast majority of mass shootings carried out in Chicago.

Why don’t we hear about this form of massacre?

It seems to me that in Chicago, they have #GangPrivilege.

If white men had carried out that shooting, it would’ve been global news.

Regardless of the race of the victims.

ALL WHITE PEOPLE WOULD BE BLAMED.
    #WhitePrivilege is just a hashtag.

    A political hashtag.

It’s actually totally heartless to every race, on every level.

  18. Very cool, boss!

Our Quarter Millionth Post Milestone…or our first Q!
    Hah.

And how fitting and cool it is, that it was one of Your posts that made that milestone!
    I love it!

    1. I remembered our prior celebration of an earlier milestone – I think it was 6-figures – right? I tried to find the post about it, but couldn’t remember when it happened. But yeah! I was inspired by that one! ❤
